Telugu Language
Recording Project - A very enthusiastic Committee has been formed
in Visakhapatnam, India to complete 5 InterComm Videos
in the Telugu Language later this year. Titles have been chosen and
translation
has already begun.
The People of Andhra Pradesh State
68 million people in South India’s Andhra Pradesh State
speak the Telugu Language. At least 30 million more Telugu
speakers also populate surrounding States. Virtually 1 out
of every 10 souls in India could be approached with video
speaking this major language. 89% of these people are raised
Hindu with the Muslim population rapidly increasing,
especially around the capital city of Hyderabad. Andhra
Pradesh consists of 33 tribal groups, with 16 of them still
unreached. Media tools, relating to Indian culture, in the
Telugu Language, will draw a crowd, bringing many out to see
and hear the Gospel in an Indian context.
The Church and Christian Leadership
It was here in the Andhra Pradesh State that Protestant
mission work began in India. There are over 66,000 churches
and many denominations, but western influences of
materialism and comfort have infiltrated the church, and
Hindus have been somewhat successful in winning back many to
Hinduism with 30% losses in some areas. A reinvigoration is
needed. There are many Tribal areas where there is no
witness, no church, and no outreach programs.
InterComm Strategy
InterComm is uniquely blessed to have 3 video titles
produced in India and Sri Lanka, that specifically speak to
this Asian culture.
They are non-western and culturally relevant to these areas
of the world. They are JOURNEY TO THE SKY. ELEPHANT BOY,
and MARK OF THE RED HAND. These 3 titles have been chosen
by leadership in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India to be
dubbed into the Telugu Language. Along with these titles,
the classic, PILGRIM’S PROGRESS, and the Bible story, JONAH
& THE BIG STORM, for children, have also been selected.
Leadership
Lane and Jill Anderson met with a group of interested
people, most already part of the InterComm Media Evangelism
Family, in July of 2005. The enthusiasm displayed by this
Committee is unparalleled. It will be hard to limit them to
only one language and just 5
films. Pastor Shalem Israel was chosen as the
Project Leader. He has a background in radio and is in the
process of building a very good Recording Studio, which we
expect will be the InterComm recording site.
We could spend a lot of time with facts and figures which
perhaps is the more professional approach to present a
Proposal, but we’d rather share with you some of the stories
we were told while in Visakhapatnam.
During the second day of meetings in Visak, as it’s
nicknamed, videos were being viewed as part of the selection
process. A quiet young man leaned over and told us that he
was invited to this meeting, because of his interest in
media, but he had no idea we were the people that had
provided
his Torch Kit
and English Language
videos such as ELEPHANT BOY and JOURNEY TO THE SKY. He was
overwhelmed that these were going to be recorded into the
Telugu Language. God had already blessed his usage of
InterComm media in helping him establish many new churches
in tribal areas. He was also very enthusiastic about the
process InterComm had put in place where Telugu people are
in charge of the script translation, they pick the videos,
and they select the voices to be used. In other words, it
is their Project, and they are in charge. It was a
wonderful confirmation of the validity of the Project and
the process.
Later, on Sunday we visited a Telugu Language church to tell
them about the Proposed Project and request prayer. After
the Pastor had given his message in Telugu, Lane was to
introduce the congregation to the Project. After doing so,
he sat down and the Telugu Language pastor reached over and
related the following.
“I’m so excited about this proposed Project. I’ve been
praying for over 10 years that we could have more media
materials available for evangelism in the Telugu Language.
The selection available now is very limited. In fact, I’m
so excited about this Project the hairs on my arm are
standing on end.”
He then proceeded to roll up his sleeve and show Lane that
this was true.
